TRIP TO THE TELEMANCA MOUNTAINS DEC 2018

In Dec 2018 a group from the American Legion Post 10 and ARCR headed to the Telemanca Mountains in Costa Rica to help the indigenous people (Cabecar) who are primary hunter gatherers. The American Legion has been going there for many years. This time the operation was headed Martha Rollins ( the wife of American Legion Member Roger Rollins who also went on this trip). We went to two schools and all the children and families met at these schools. We brought toys, fruit, backpacks, entertainment and food to be cooked. This time we brought two doctors and for some it was the first time they had ever seen a doctor. Below the photos you can click on the link and read Martha’s full report.

EVERY YEAR WE PRESENT AWARDS TO INDIVIDUALS AND COMPANIES THAT ASSIST  THE AMERICAN LEGION IN  CARRYING OUT OUR MISSION.

CHILDREN OF TALAMANCA

The indigenous children that live in the Talamanca Mountains in Eastern Costa Rica are a group of people called Cabecan. Most of the people are very poor with only the basic necessities. The children walk 2 to 3 kilometers a day to reach the schools and must cross several rivers each day. The children speak Cabecan but are learning Spanish. The American Legion, Martha Rollins and other groups donate money to buy supplies, books, boot and numerous other items the children need. At least once a year during the dry season (Nov-Apr) we take a 4 wheel drive vehicle and endure the 2 ½ hour road trip (more like a trail) to take these items to the two schools you will see in these slides. Additionally, we buy supplies which an indigenous man, Robert, takes by horseback (which takes a full day to reach) a group of 5 orphans which lost their parents a couple of years ago
